Mutare Proposes US$2,4 Million Budget For Street, Traffic Lights

By Felix Matasva

Mutare City Council has in its 2024 annual budget consultations proposed to raise US$2,425 000 for street and traffic lights.

This was revealed by acting roads engineer, Daniel Nyirenda while addressing Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) during a budget consultation meeting held at civic centre recently.

He said the eastern border city authority has targeted to upgrade and install streetlights at a cost of US$2,425 000.

“The issue of traffic lights specifically has been a headache to us. We have had traffic light projects that did not come out well because of issues with contractors,” Nyirenda said.

He added: “The nonfunctioning traffic lights are solar powered but initially we planned to use hybrid robots (traffic lights using electricity and solar at the same time). The solar part failed us.”

Nyirenda said that the local authority will make use of its employees to install traffic lights accross the city.

Council insiders has told Orbit International Youth that public lighting project will be spearheaded by government in partnership with Rwanda at a cost pegged at US$2,12 million.
