Zanu PF Mutare Central constituency Esau Mupfumi has hit out at Mutare electorate for voting Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), saying they want to receive handouts from rights groups with a regime change agenda.
Mupfumi who got 5 010 votes was defeated by CCC opponent Brian James who garnered 15 628 votes.
He said the electorate is selling out the country while downplaying the efforts of their ancestors who lost their lives to liberate it.
“This country did not come on a silver platter, it was paid for in full measure and with ultimate sacrifice of blood and life but the majority have sold out for a plate of porridge because they receive from NGOs whose agenda is for regime change,” Mupfumi said.
He added: “The majority of people in Mutare Central chose to sell the country, that our forefathers and mothers fought and died for during the liberation struggle.”
Mupfumi expressed gratitude to those who voted for him and urged them not to be discouraged by the election outcome.
“We will continue working with you and remain supportive as always,” reads part of the message.
James told this publication that he will release a statement soon after a meeting with CCC leader, Nelson Chamisa.
“CCC MP Candidates are meeting with our president Nelson Chamisa today. From there I will be able to make a statement since you know the Presidential results are under dispute,” he said.
CCC deputy president Lynnette Karenyi-Kore polled 14 237 votes while her opponent Kenneth Muchina of Zanu PF 3 852 in Chikanga constituency.
CCC chief whip Prosper Mutseyami retained Dangamvura Constituency seat after he got 17 000 votes while Clide Jani of Zanu PF polled 6 343 votes.
