MASVINGO – In a media Indaba held in Masvingo, media expert Dr Last Alfandika emphasized the importance of ethical reporting and urged journalists to avoid sensationalism when covering elections. The event, organized by Orbit Youth International, aimed to equip journalists with the necessary knowledge and tools to accurately fulfill their mandate during the upcoming election period in Zimbabwe.
Dr Alfandika highlighted the high emotions surrounding elections for both voters and political parties and leaders, making it crucial for journalists to approach their reporting responsibly. Sensationalizing political information and politicians can lead to biased reporting and misinformation, which can negatively impact the electoral process.
“During the Indaba, we discussed ethical reporting and the importance of news values. It is essential for journalists to avoid sensationalization and ensure that they provide accurate and reliable information to the public,” said Dr Alfandika.
Fact-checking was also emphasized as a vital aspect of election reporting. In an era of social media and the spread of fake news, journalists have a crucial role in combating misinformation and disinformation. By verifying facts and going the extra mile, media houses can establish themselves as trusted sources of information within the communities they serve.
“Journalists are not only responsible for disseminating information but also for fighting fake news. Through fact-checking, media houses can ensure that voters have access to accurate information, enabling them to make well-informed decisions,” added Dr Alfandika.
Kudzai Zvinavashe, an organizer with the Content Creators Network, emphasized the importance of such workshops in enhancing journalists’ skill sets. As key players in information dissemination during elections, journalists have a pivotal role to play in shaping public opinion.
“This workshop is aimed at building the capacity of content creators within our network and beyond. With the focus on election coverage, it is crucial for journalists to be well-equipped to fulfill their responsibilities,” said Zvinavashe.
The Content Creators Network, consisting of Zimbabwe’s leading digital and community media houses, recognizes the significance of providing accurate and unbiased information to the public during the election period.
As Zimbabwe approaches the upcoming elections, it is imperative for journalists to adhere to ethical reporting practices, avoid sensationalism, and prioritize fact-checking. By doing so, they can contribute to a fair and transparent electoral process, ensuring that voters have access to reliable information to make informed decisions on August 23, 2023.
