Drivers urged to drive with Caution

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has urged drivers to exercise caution when driving on the roads.

This follows a fatal accident recorded along Bulawayo-Beitbridge road on December 17, 2022 where a Toyota Quest encroached an oncoming lane colliding with a Delta Scania Iriza bus.

Four people died on the spot while five were injured.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police highlighted that drivers need to be cautious on the roads to avoid accidents.

“The ZRP reiterates that drivers should exercise caution when driving on the roads”, read the statement.

However, Ndumiso Ndlovu, a Bulawayo resident said that most of road accidents are caused by the poor state of roads in the country rather than reckless driving.

“I’m not disputing that reckless driving is one of the causes of road accidents but most of these roads aren’t even worth driving on, so people will be trying to dodge potholes and end up in the wrong lanes, the police should also include these things when writing these statements”, said Ndlovu.

Sbusiso Moyo said that drivers should prioritize life first than arriving early.

“Most drivers are always in a hurry to reach their destinations while putting their lives and others at risk. Reckless driving has destroyed many lives and its high time the ZRP take it serious and charge heavy fines on those seen driving recklessly”, said Moyo.

He added: “We only live once and people should take note of that especially this festive season and drive safely while taking note of all rules on the road. ZRP should also be cautious and make sure they arrest all people who drive without licenses or those who drive on the roads while drunk.”

In a similar encounter, two people died in a road traffic accident where a motorist driving a Renault Chendero vehicle collided with a bus after trying to overtake while there was an oncoming vehicle along Masvingo-Beitbridge road on December 17, 2022.
